American Music Awards

  • LASEC assisted this event by helping sponsor its city-wide banner program promoting the event.
January 30

LASEC/NCP Super Bowl Party in Miami

  • Supporters of the New Coliseum enjoyed a pre-Super Bowl Dinner in Miami while working to attract future Super Bowls (economic impact: $300 million per Super Bowl) to Los Angeles.
  • Why: Super Bowl major economic impact
February 21

Dodger Jersey Preview

  • LASEC hosted a promotional event previewing the new Dodger Jerseys which featured the City of Los Angeles.
  • The new road uniforms help promote the City of Los Angeles by highlighting "Los Angeles" on the front of the jersey, rather than "Dodgers". At this event, photos were taken of City leaders in their new jerseys with favorite Dodgers, Steve Garvey and Ron Cey.
February

41st Annual GRAMMY Awards

  • After two years in New York, LASEC and EIDC were successful in luring the GRAMMY Awards back to the Shrine Auditorium in Los Angeles.
  • LASEC and EIDC hosted the Mayor’s Reception. City, County and State leaders joined Mayor Riordan, LASEC and EIDC in welcoming the GRAMMY trustees and chapter members to Los Angeles at the Van Gogh exhibit. At this event, Mayor Riordan emphasized the importance of keeping the GRAMMYs in Los Angeles - both from economic impact and because of what they do to help keep music in schools and in the community.
  • LASEC played a lead role in the GRAMMY Host Committee which helped generate money for GRAMMY sponsored community events throughout the City of Los Angeles.
  • LASEC assisted in GRAMMY Fest month where popular singer Julio Iglesias kicked off a month of GRAMMY Fest activities when he visited with a music class at Fremont High School in Los Angeles.
  • The 1999 GRAMMY Awards generated over $25 million of economic impact to Los Angeles
March

14th Annual City of Los Angeles Marathon

  • LASEC assisted in international promotion of this City event several ways, including hosting the President’s Reception, highlighting the significance of this event to the City. Several hundred business, sports, community and civic leaders attended this special LASEC sponsored reception honoring the City of Los Angeles Marathon, one of the largest marathons in the country and a significant tourist attraction.
  • Records were broken this year. Over 20,000 runners participated in the 14th annual marathon and winner Simon Bor broke an 11-year course record by 55 seconds.
  • LASEC participated in the kick-off the annual Los Angeles Marathon Torch Run that benefited dozens of local charities and also featured Rafer Johnson.

NCAA Women’s Basketball West Regionals

  • LASEC and USC hosted a Mayor’s Reception welcoming the NCAA to Los Angeles. Making this event successful was the first step in a campaign to attract other NCAA events to Los Angeles.
  • Additionally, LASEC helped support this event by obtaining sponsors to purchase tickets to the event (and also to provide tickets to children and youth organizations) and by sponsoring the city-wide banner program promoting the event.
March 21

Academy Awards

  • Hosting the Academy Awards in Los Angeles each year contributes over $60 million to the local economy. Additionally, the prestige of the show and the international visibility helps increase tourism.
  • The future home of the Academy Awards, the Hollywood & Highland project developed by TrizecHahn, has been the cornerstone in the revitalization of Hollywood Boulevard.
  • While LASEC does not play a role in assisting this event, the Entertainment Industry Development Corporation (EIDC), a LASEC board member, does assist the Academy with its logistics and the Executive Director of the Academy serves on LASEC’s Advisory Board.

Nickelodeon Kids Choice Awards at Pauley Pavillion

  • Nickelodeon’s Kids Choice Awards once again was filmed in Los Angeles and is the most watched award show by kids (and their parents).
May 13

Awards Dinner honoring LASEC

  • LASEC received the 1999 Most Valuable Pro (MVP) Award from the Public Communicators of Los Angeles in recognition of LASEC’s tremendous efforts in raising the profile of Los Angeles through a diverse group of projects.

5th Annual Blockbuster Entertainment Awards at Shrine

  • LASEC assisted Blockbuster in promoting the show’s move to the Shrine Auditorium this year and the show produced its highest ratings ever.
  • LASEC is working with Blockbuster to package the show next year (like the Emmy Awards) and use it as a tourism promotion.

MTV Movie Awards

  • LASEC assisted MTV on the promotion of the Movie Awards. MTV achieved record-breaking ratings on this year’s show.

Wizard of Oz Opening at the Pantages

  • LASEC assisted Radio City Productions in promoting the Wizard of Oz’s Los Angeles premiere.

January

LASEC Super Bowl Dinner in San Diego

  • LASEC and the New Coliseum Partners host a pre-Super Bowl party for supporters of the NFL’s return to Los Angeles. The 1998 Super Bowl generated over $300 million of economic impact (spending) to San Diego.
March

1st Annual LASEC Sports Calendar

  • LASEC developed this calendar as a comprehensive listing of events for sports and entertainment fans in Los Angeles.
April

Kids Choice Awards Show

  • LASEC and local Angelenos welcomed Nickelodeon’s executives and fans back to Los Angeles with a Welcome Reception at Dodger Stadium.
July 20 - 26

U.S. Senior Open

  • "At Breakfast with Chi Chi Rodriquez" was an event LASEC and ARCO co-hosted to secure additional corporate sponsorship and support for the U.S. Senior Open.
  • LASEC is working with The Riviera Country Club to be chosen as the site of the 2006 or 2008 U.S. Open.
  • LASEC, United Way and ARCO teamed up and brought hundreds of Los Angeles kids to The Riviera Country Club to experience a professional golf tournament and meet Chi Chi Rodriguez for "Kids Day with LASEC."

Mercedes-Benz Tennis Cup Reception & Celebrity Tennis Match

  • LASEC assisted in promotion of this event to community leaders and ticket buyers.
  • This annual tournament attracts the world’s best tennis players, and Opening Night featured celebrities like Robin Williams, Billy Crystal and a performance by Reba McIntyre.

"Are You Ready for Football" Conference

  • Top sports, business and political leaders took part in LASEC’s conference, that helped further the process of bringing an NFL football team back to Los Angeles and highlighted the economic impact Super Bowls have on host cities (at least $300 million of spending).

MTV Video Music Awards

  • After four years, LASEC brought MTV back to Los Angeles and achieved some of the show’s highest ratings.
  • LASEC, Mayor Riordan and prominent Angelenos welcomed MTV’s executives and sponsors to Los Angeles with a Sky Bar reception prior to the show.
  • To generate additional publicity for the show, LASEC & EIDC assisted MTV in renaming Hollywood Boulevard "MTV Boulevard," and the ceremony was broadcast on MTV
  • LASEC and Mayor Riordan also participated in the press conference announcing the nominees for the show with Courtney Love
November 3 Proclamation presented to Southern California Golf Association (SCGA) for 100th Anniversary by LASEC and the Mayor’s Office

2nd Annual LASEC Sports & Entertainment Calendar

  • The LASEC calendar was created to showcase, in one place, all of the major sporting & entertainment events in Los Angeles. The 2nd edition, published by the Los Angeles Business Journal, featured Ed Roski’s plan for The New Coliseum.
December 1

1st Annual Downtown Holiday Spectacular (DHS)

  • The Downtown Holiday Spectacular was created by LASEC to help promote all of the great sporting and entertainment events in LA and was attended by over 3,000 people - a home-run event.
  • LASEC received recognition at the "Roses & Lemon" event for producing an event that highlighted Downtown Los Angeles.

 

1997  
October

Women’s World Cup Press Conference

  • LASEC assisted with the press conference announcing that The Rose Bowl is awarded the Women’s World Cup 1999 finals which will bring thousands of international visitors (and generate incredible media attention) to Los Angeles.
October Staples Center Approval
  • LASEC played a major role in generating community and political support to approve the arena being built in Downtown Los Angeles (instead of Inglewood).
  • The new state-of-the-art arena will help attract more major events to Los Angeles, increasing the city’s national and international visibility and desirability as a tourist destination.
