MLB played its first All-Star Game at Dodger Stadium in 42 years yesterday, with the “emotional night” ending in a 3-2 American League victory. A sellout crowd of 52,518 watched as “memories shined, greatness glowed,” as the “almost perfect night … contained monstrous homers, dizzying pitching.” Even by “Hollywood’s high standards,” the game was a “midsummer classic indeed.” The “real MVP truly may have been Dodger fans,” who “bared their souls for a national television audience.” They “rained boos down upon anyone with a Houston Astros uniform” (L.A. TIMES, 7/20).
It was a “decidedly made-for-TV All-Star Game” (USA TODAY, 7/20). On and off the field, the game was “star-studded,” as the crowd in attendance included Denzel Washington, Magic Johnson, Billie Jean King and a “host of other celebrities” — actors Jon Hamm, Tiffany Haddish, Jason Bateman and Miles Teller; Warriors coach Steve Kerr; Pro Football HOFer Terrell Owens; NFLPA Exec Dir DeMaurice Smith; Warriors co-owner Peter Guber; and race car team owner Chip Ganassi (USA TODAY, 7/20).
